We evaluated the therapeutic role of digital storytelling for adolescents with HIV. Abstract The global commitment to universal access for people in need of antiretroviral therapy has transformed the lives of adolescents with HIV. In contrast, there has been limited commitment at policy or service level to the need for effective therapeutic interventions which can help them to cope with their life experiences. It is imperative that the scale up of antiretroviral therapy programmes is accompanied by evidence-based therapeutic approaches if we are to assist adolescents to make informed treatment and secondary prevention decisions and to enjoy happy, fulfilled lives. This pilot study sought to evaluate the digital storytelling process as a therapeutic intervention for 12 HIV positive adolescents and young people within Africaid’s Zvandiri programme in Harare, Zimbabwe. Drawing on narrative therapy, each storyteller created a digital film in which they narrated their life experiences and dominant themes in their lives. Storytellers found the process therapeutic as it helped them to move away from the negative themes which dominated their lives to a newer, richer perspective of their lives in which they had overcome challenges. Their films have provided caregivers and programmers with new insights into the challenges they faced and appropriate interventions for other adolescents living with HIV. Previous article in issue.
Discrimination against people with HIV/AIDS
Young women years old are twice as likely to acquire HIV as young men the same age. HIV disproportionately affects women and adolescent girls because of vulnerabilities created by unequal cultural, social and economic status. Unaccommodating attitudes towards sex outside of marriage and the restricted social autonomy of women and young girls can reduce their ability to access sexual health and HIV services. Much has been done to reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV, but much more needs to be done to reduce the gender inequality and violence that women and young girls at risk of HIV often face.

Not only must we face the same plights and perils of the hetero single soldiers, but we must also face the cold reality of a much smaller dating pool, our exes dating other exes and an unrealistic image of what it is to be shirtless. So we try to arm ourselves as best we can, because no matter how many broken hearts we bury, the battle for love must go on. But there is one surefire way of turning every future love scenario into a bloodbath, no matter how much of a match the two of you may be, and that is being HIV-positive and desperate for a date.
It is one thing to admit that you are open to finding love. It is quite another to constantly be wondering why you don’t have a boyfriend. Before you can find the right man to bake cookies with and watch romantic comedies on a rainy Sunday afternoon, it takes realizing that you are better off alone than trapped in a relationship with Mr. Of course, gays who are too eager for love come in the form of both statuses, but an HIV-positive man is a particular breed of desperate.
These guys will often approach a first date with the hope that their potential match will be able to overlook their positive status and give them a chance in spite of it all. Once they do, it is as if their date has done something for them and they instantly move up one, maybe two stages, on the clinger scale. All of a sudden, the pressure is on for this date to turn into a mate, regardless of personal interests or compatibility. This is desperate talk from HIV-positive men: I want them to get to know me before I tell them I am positive.

Nearly one in seven new HIV infections could be prevented if women were not subjected to physical or sexual abuse, and a similar number prevented if relationship inequalities were eliminated, the study authors note. Although most new HIV infections in high prevalence areas occur in women, most HIV prevention programs target male condom use, testing, treatment of sexually transmitted infections, male circumcision and antiretroviral treatment.
Previous studies have suggested a potential link between male partner violence, relationship inequalities and increased risk of HIV infection in women. However, this study is the first to evaluate new infections over time among women who have experienced violence, and provides the strongest evidence to date of a causal link. Lack of such evidence has limited the resources allocated to HIV prevention programs and interventions that focus on gender issues, Dunkle says.
To further examine the effects of male partner violence and power inequity in sexual relationships on new HIV infections, Dunkle and colleagues from the Medical Research Council in South Africa examined data from an HIV prevention trial in South Africa. They studied 1, young African women who were HIV negative at the start of the study and who had at least one subsequent HIV test over two years of follow-up.
Women were given face-to-face interviews to assess exposure to violence and gender equality in their relationships. Women in relationships with low equality at the start of the study had a much higher incidence of HIV compared to women with medium or high relationship power 51 of women versus 73 of women. Additionally, women who reported more than one episode of abuse from a male partner at the start of the study were more likely to acquire HIV than those who experienced one or no episodes of abuse 45 of women versus 83 of women.
Dunkle and team found that if gender inequalities were improved so that no women were in relationships with low power,

Africa Amid mounting concern that progress in fighting the global AIDS epidemic is stalling, campaigners were given a boost from a surprising quarter this week. In contrast, far less progress had been made in West Africa, particularly Nigeria — where numbers had declined by only five percent. But although South Africa appeared to have bucked the international trend, Dr Buthelezi said that within the five year reporting period the rate of decline in new infections had begun to plateau.
This, however, is primarily because fewer people are dying of AIDS and other HIV-related diseases thanks to greater access to anti-retroviral medication that suppresses the growth of HIV. The decline in new cases of HIV has also largely been attributed to anti-retroviral drugs, which make it harder for those already infected with the virus to transmit it to others.

We need to be more honest. The following piece contains spoilers for season 3 of “How to Get Away with Murder. Connor was the more promiscuous of the two, so if the writers were to write into all the stereotypes around HIV, his results would have come back positive. They didn’t do that, and Connor wasn’t positive. The two hardly mentioned Oliver’s status, until after they broke up in season three and Oliver was worried about who would accept him with his status.
Connor was the first guy he dated with full knowledge of his status and it was so easy he didn’t have to worry.

This has given hope to the 37 million people worldwide infected with the virus that causes AIDS. However, the case is extremely rare and does not suggest a simple path to a cure, experts say. However, this child has no signs of the disease. The child was part of a clinical trial in which researchers were investigating the effect of treating HIV-positive babies in the first few weeks of life, and then stopping and starting the ART medicines while checking whether their HIV was being controlled.
Treatment with ART started when the child was almost nine weeks old but was interrupted at 40 weeks when the virus had been suppressed, and the child was monitored regularly for any signs of relapse. The South African child, who contracted the virus from its mother, is the third who achieved a long remission using this approach. Other similar cases include a French woman aged roughly 20 who was born with HIV and has her infection under control despite no HIV medicines since she was around six, and a Mississippi baby born with HIV in suppressed her infection for 27 months after stopping treatment before it reappeared in her blood.
She was able to get the virus under control again after treatment resumed. However, researchers believe the South African case is the first instance of sustained virological control from a randomised trial of ART interruption following early treatment of infants. The vast majority of patients with HIV find that the virus increases in the body if they stop treatment, but this child was different, according to researchers. Yet in terms of the scientific search for a cure for HIV and AIDS, she said, it appeared only to confirm previous reports of similarly rare cases.

But there were other problems in the proclamation that AIDS antiretrovirals extended lives an average of 15 years. And they soon became apparent. While the original AIDS patients were desperately ill, many of them showing fowl tuberculosis early in their disease, presumably through rectal transmission………. Such AIDS individuals would survive longer. And then there was the terrible toxicities of these antiretrovirals. The fact that certain studies claim that antiretrovirals extend the life of an AIDS patient does not mean that they are benign in the least.
The project is funded by the NIMH. The intervention is informed by a theoretical model that is derived from existing research addressing the associations between IPV and ideologies of male superiority, a culture of violence, and high levels of alcohol and drug use. The process of intervention development has included integrating existing relevant evidence-based programmes, team workshops, and consultations with experts in the field and with key informant adolescents.
The initial testing of the intervention with evaluation in four schools will be completed in National female homicide study This is a retrospective study of the homicides of women aged 14 and over in South Africa in , which involved data collection from mortuary death registers which were followed up via their police case numbers. The main study finding was that, in South Africa a woman is killed every 6 hours by an intimate partner, which received extensive media attention and has also been used extensively in all advocacy campaigns to raise awareness among policy makers and communities.
The study finding on the use of guns in these murders has also been used in the process of developing the new Firearms Control Act in South Africa. Publications from the study findings have been presented for publication. Bulletin of the World Health Organisation Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.
